The Favor Factor | Week Two

Main Idea: Legacy Over Survival

Will we be a church that gives to survive a season, or a church that sows to launch a legacy of favor?

God’s favor is not a transactional promise of wealth, but a principle of spiritual and communal multiplication. When we move beyond "maintenance giving" and embrace "legacy sowing," we position our families and our church to experience God’s abundant harvest. Generosity is the natural response to a Savior who has already given us everything.

Scripture Focus: 2 Corinthians 9:6-11

"Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously."

Key Observations

  • Agricultural Capital: In the ancient world, seed was capital. Throwing it on the ground looked like a loss, but it was actually an investment in a future harvest.

  • The Proportionality Principle: The harvest is directly linked to the sowing; communal generosity positions the church for a move of God.

  • The Decided Heart: Giving should be a premeditated act ("decided in your heart"), not a reactive response to guilt or social pressure.

  • The "All" Promise: Paul uses "all" or "every" five times in verse 8 to emphasize God's total provision, He supplies the seed specifically so it can be given away.

Addressing Traps and Gaps

  • The Pressure Trap: Have you ever felt that "internal cringe" when giving feels like a forced "tax" or a response to budget demands? How does "pre-deciding" your gift change your heart's posture?

  • The Fear Gap: In times of transition, our instinct is to "close the bucket" and hoard resources. How do we practically shift from a mindset of scarcity to trusting in God's all-sufficiency?

  • The Joy Test: When does giving feel like a "line item chore" to you? How can we regain the "hilarious joy" (hilaros) that comes from seeing our seeds grow into miracles in the lives of others?

The Source of Favor

  • Paul argues that God provides "seed to the sower" (v. 10). If the purpose of surplus is to equip us for "every good work," how does that challenge our pursuit of personal luxury?

  • How does united giving act as a mission to display God's sufficiency to a skeptical world?

Application: Sowing for the Move of God

Our giving is not a budget necessity; it is a spiritual launchpad. The Spirit helps us prepare our giving to remove pressure and unlock trust.

Prayer Focus

  • Trust over Tension: Ask the Holy Spirit to help you make giving decisions based on trust in God’s character rather than the tension of your circumstances.

  • A Revolution of Thanksgiving: Pray that our collective generosity would result in a vertical response of praise and thanksgiving to God from our community.

  • Connection to the Source: Ask for a heart that stays connected to the Source that never runs dry, recognizing that we are conduits for His glory.
