Opening

Ask your group:

  • Have you ever made a short-term decision you regretted later? What led to that choice?
  • When you think of the word compromise, what emotions or memories come to mind?

Then ask:

  • Why do you think pursuing holiness requires long-term vision and not just good intentions?

Overview

Scripture: Hebrews 12:14-17

Main Idea:

Holiness isn’t passive—it’s pursued. God invites us to a life that is distinct, healed, and holy. But that pursuit is often challenged by bitterness, compromise, and short-sighted decisions. Esau's story warns us of the danger of trading what’s sacred for what’s easy. Holiness isn't about perfection—it's about perseverance, endurance, and aligning our lives with God's eternal purpose.

Key Insight:

Bitterness spreads. Impulses deceive. And compromise always costs more than it promises. Holiness is a gift of grace, but it’s also a calling that demands our intentional participation.

Discussion Questions

  • What stands out to you from Hebrews 12:14–17?
  • What does it look like to "make every effort" to live in peace and holiness in your relationships and lifestyle?
  • Read verse 15. How have you seen bitterness affect individuals, families, or churches?
  • What are some common ways Christians today trade long-term spiritual reward for short-term relief or satisfaction?
  • Esau wanted the blessing later, but couldn’t undo his earlier decision. How does that challenge or convict you?
  • What’s one area where the Spirit may be calling you to resist compromise or impulsive living?

Closing

Take time to pray together:

  • Ask God to reveal any roots of bitterness or areas of short-sightedness in your hearts.
  • Invite the Holy Spirit to build endurance and obedience in your group’s lives.
  • Pray for courage to live set apart—not out of pressure, but out of purpose.
  • Thank God for the grace that not only saves, but shapes us to be more like Jesus.
