Saving Grace | Week Three

Main Idea
An encounter with the risen Jesus occurs when the Spirit of Christ opens the Word of God to set the heart of man on fire.
On the "Emmaus Mile," many of us settle for religion, knowing the songs, the facts, and the "correct" answers, while living a life devoid of power. True transformation happens when the Holy Spirit turns "I've heard that" into "He is here" and "I am changed". This encounter shatters the "Great Disconnect" between our public religious persona and our private reality.
Scripture Focus
Luke 24:30–32
"When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him... They asked each other, 'Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?'"
Key Observations
Proximity of God: Jesus does not wait for us to have perfect theology before He draws near; He intrudes on our confusion and walks into the middle of our "double lives".
The Recognition Gap: The disciples were kept from recognizing Jesus because He didn't fit the "Jesus" they had built in their heads. We can know the facts of the Resurrection but remain stuck in secret habits.
The Invitation: Transformation began when the disciples invited Jesus into their space, saying, "Stay with us".
The Burning Heart: An encounter with Jesus moves Him from a biographical story in a book to a driving fire in the chest that changes everything about how we live.
Group Discussion
The "Professional" Christian
In the sermon, a man with a "perfect" Christian resume realized he had plenty of religion but zero power. Have you ever felt like you were "walking with Jesus" in name only while your heart was miles away?
Which "Symptom of Disconnection" resonates most with you right now: the Boredom of Information, the Numbness of Guilt, or the Comfort of the Mask?
The Emmaus Road
The disciples were talking about Jesus while He was walking with them. Why is it easier to talk about the "facts" of faith than it is to recognize His actual presence in our daily mess?
What are the "shadows" or hidden parts of your life that you’ve tried to keep separate from your "church life"?
The Pivot
When the disciples recognized Jesus, they immediately did a "pivot" and ran back to where they belonged. What would a "pivot" look like in your life this week?
An outpouring of power makes a "double life" impossible to maintain. How does the "fire in the chest" help us stop "white-knuckling" our way into being good people?
Application: Breaking the Disconnect
The Resurrection isn't just a historical event to be studied; it is a current power to be experienced.
Response Steps:
Stop Faking: Identify one "polite lie" or hidden habit you have been managing. Bring that specific mess to the "Fire" of the Holy Spirit today.
Invite Him In: Like the disciples in Emmaus, pray an intentional prayer of invitation: "Stay with me, Jesus. Open my eyes to see You in the middle of my mess".
Go Public: If you have been living a double life, make a move toward integrity. This might mean pursuing baptism, confessing to a spouse or mentor, or finally getting "plugged into the Source" through the church community.
