Compassion | Week One

Opening

Have you ever experienced the love of Christ through the compassion of others? How have these experiences influenced your faith and understanding of God’s heart?

Overview

Scripture: Matthew 25:31-40

Compassion is at the heart of the gospel. Jesus taught that genuine faith is demonstrated through acts of kindness, especially toward the vulnerable and marginalized. Compassion theology emphasizes that serving others is not optional for believers — it is a reflection of God’s character and an essential expression of our faith. Through compassionate action, we partner with God’s redemptive work in the world.

Main Idea

In Matthew 25, Jesus uses the parable of the sheep and the goats to reveal the significance of compassionate service. He identifies with those in need, declaring that whatever we do for “the least of these,” we do for Him. This challenges us to see Christ in others and respond with love and care.

Serving others is more than a moral obligation; it is a spiritual practice that shapes us to become more like Jesus. Compassionate action requires humility, patience, and a willingness to enter into the struggles of others. As we serve, we not only meet practical needs but also bear witness to the transforming power of God’s love.

Discussion Questions

  • In Matthew 25:40, Jesus says, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” How does this perspective impact your view of serving others?
  • In what ways can we demonstrate compassion in our daily lives, both within our church community and beyond?
  • How does serving others reflect God’s kingdom here on earth?

Closing

Pray together, asking God to soften your hearts and help you respond to those in need. Invite the Holy Spirit to cultivate a spirit of compassion within you. Ask for opportunities to serve and reflect God’s love to others.
